There's a quiet myth that the rains are the season to stay put. We'd argue the opposite. The monsoon turns some of the world's most ordinary landscapes extraordinary — and where it does pour, you're never more than a short flight from sunshine. Here's where to go between June and September, whether you want to walk into the rain or away from it.

India — where the monsoon is the main event

From June, the southwest monsoon sweeps up the country and transforms it. Waterfalls run full, the hills turn impossibly green, and rates drop while crowds thin. These are the places worth getting a little wet for.

Kerala · June – September

Munnar & the backwaters

Tea estates wrapped in mist, full waterfalls and the start of Kerala's celebrated Ayurveda season — the cool, humid air is considered ideal for treatments. A houseboat on the Alleppey backwaters in light rain is one of India's most peaceful experiences.

Karnataka · July – September

Coorg & the Western Ghats

Coffee country at its greenest, with the Ghats thundering with seasonal falls like Abbey and Iruppu. Quiet, fragrant and made for slow mornings with a view and a cup of local brew.

Maharashtra · July – August

Lonavala & Mahabaleshwar

The classic monsoon getaway from Mumbai and Pune — cliffs draped in cloud, roadside corn and chai, and valleys that disappear and reappear through the mist within minutes.

Uttarakhand · July – early September

The Valley of Flowers

This UNESCO-listed Himalayan meadow only blooms during the monsoon. For a few short weeks it carpets itself in wildflowers — a trek that simply doesn't exist the rest of the year.

And where to escape the rain — without leaving India

If you'd rather dodge the downpour, head to the rain-shadow deserts of the high Himalaya. Ladakh and Spiti sit behind the mountains that catch the monsoon, so they stay dry, clear and accessible exactly when the rest of the country is wettest. June to September is their peak window.

Travel in the rains and you trade the crowds for colour — greener hills, fuller falls, softer light and far better value.

Abroad — chasing the sun while India pours

The Indian monsoon lines up neatly with summer and dry seasons across much of the world. If you want guaranteed sunshine, this is the time to look outward.

East Africa · July – September

Kenya & Tanzania safari

The dry season is prime game-viewing — and it coincides with the Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest cross the Mara and Serengeti. Clear skies, thin vegetation and animals gathered at the water. Few trips feel more alive.

Indonesia · June – September

Bali

This is Bali's dry season — sunny days, lower humidity and calm seas for the islands. Ideal for a villa stay, with reliable weather for Nusa Penida and the Gili crossings.

Europe · June – September

Switzerland, Italy & the Mediterranean

Long, warm days and the continent at its liveliest. Alpine trains, Amalfi coastlines and late-evening light until nearly ten — the textbook European summer while the monsoon does its work back home.

Indian Ocean · June – September

Mauritius

The island's cooler, drier winter season — comfortable, breezy and quieter, with some of the year's best value on resorts and overwater stays.
